Explain this about the McCain insurance plan to me.?
I just read it on his web sight. He wants to make it so that people can buy health insurance across state lines so that people can buy insurance in States where it is cheaper.
I am a hospital administrator with Hospitals in 18 States. We charge 30% more in Tahoe than we do in Rocky Mount North Carolina. That is because salaries are higher in Tahoe.
Isn’t that the main reason that insurance is cheaper in NC than it is in Tahoe? Can insurance companies really let you buy it at NC rates when you live in California?
I was a general agent in the insurance business and represented many insurance companies and had a number of agents I supervised. This is what I observed.
1. Insurance rates are adjusted based on area medical rates, and that does change from are to area, not necessarily by states.
2. Insurance companies base their rates on what they think people can afford and on what the market will bear. If McCain changes the laws, insurance companies will simply change their billing structures and the general public will continue to get ripped off.
3. Executives, in general, in the health insurance industry are some of the most outrageously high paid in the world. Some of them make in excess of 1 mil a month in benefits and stock options, etc. I think a lot of patients are going without their claims being paid and doing with important health care to support this. And, in the mean time, The insurance companies don’t pay the doctors very well either. As a result many services have been curtailed.
4. Some of the biggest rip offs to date (in the US) involve retirement funds and health insurance failures and frauds.
Nationalized health care (socialized) is not the right answer. But the health insurance industry is radically out of control and medical professionals and patients both are suffering to support their greed. The entire system needs to be re-worked from the top down.
